U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 12.93%

(C) Reuters. U.S. stocks lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 12.93%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Financials, Technology and Oil & Gas sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 12.93% to hit a new 3-years low, while the S&P 500 index fell 11.98%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 12.32%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA), which fell 2.40% or 1.11 points to trade at 45.08 at the close. Meanwhile, Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) fell 4.88% or 5.57 points to end at 108.50 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was down 5.33% or 7.16 points to 127.13 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which fell 23.85% or 40.59 points to trade at 129.61 at the close. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) declined 20.80% or 22.35 points to end at 85.10 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was down 19.79% or 40.71 points to 164.96.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which rose 11.25% to 15.92, ConAgra Foods Inc (NYSE:CAG) which was up 9.76% to settle at 27.21 and JM Smucker Company (NYSE:SJM) which gained 4.65% to close at 107.84.

The worst performers were MGM Resorts International (NYSE:MGM) which was down 33.61% to 10.25 in late trade, Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA) which lost 32.34% to settle at 5.46 and Capri Holdings Ltd (NYSE:CPRI) which was down 30.65% to 9.66 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were OpGen Inc (NASDAQ:OPGN) which rose 101.00% to 4.040, Waitr Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:WTRH) which was up 74.98% to settle at 0.5512 and Trevi Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:TRVI) which gained 48.30% to close at 3.71.

The worst performers were Gulfport Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:GPOR) which was down 65.33% to 0.950 in late trade, Internap Corp (NASDAQ:INAP) which lost 58.57% to settle at 0.140 and Oasis Petroleum Inc (NASDAQ:OAS) which was down 57.99% to 0.420 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2815 to 140 and 6 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2537 fell and 195 advanced, while 12 ended unchanged.

Shares in MGM Resorts International (NYSE:MGM) fell to 5-year lows; down 33.61% or 5.19 to 10.25. Shares in Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA) fell to 5-year lows; falling 32.34% or 2.61 to 5.46. Shares in Capri Holdings Ltd (NYSE:CPRI) fell to all time lows; losing 30.65% or 4.27 to 9.66. Shares in Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) fell to 3-years lows; falling 23.85% or 40.59 to 129.61. Shares in The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) fell to 5-year lows; losing 20.80% or 22.35 to 85.10. Shares in Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) fell to 52-week lows; falling 19.79% or 40.71 to 164.96. Shares in Internap Corp (NASDAQ:INAP) fell to all time lows; losing 58.57% or 0.198 to 0.140.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 42.99% to 82.69 a new all time high.

Gold Futures for April delivery was down 0.15% or 2.20 to $1514.50 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 10.09% or 3.24 to hit $28.87 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.37% or 0.11 to trade at $29.73 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.12% to 1.1168, while USD/JPY rose 0.06% to 105.92.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.81% at 98.102.
